Pocket Landscape

I came across this journal this week and fell in love with it's green cover. It is made from the hand•book journal co. The size is wonderful 3.5" x 5.5" and it is filled with a nice heavyweight buff drawing paper. There is a nice little clear pocket in the back to hold things too.

Found an art store this week that stocks the Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils that I like. I didn't have a list of the colors I had at home, so made a color key and tossed it in the back.... just in case I wander over that way again!

IBM is a vast subject, and even an expert is bound to have a gap or two in his or her knowledge of the company. One of such gaps for me was in just how the so-called "Deep Blue" computer was programmed with the necessary expertise to beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov.

During a recent visit to IBM's Somers, New York, offices, I met with Bill Pulleyblank, vice-president of the center for business optimization for IBM Global Services. His job is to make connections between IBM Global Services and its clients, and IBM research.

Before he took his present position, Pulleyblank was the brains behind Deep Blue, if that's the right way of putting it. And to hear him talk about it is to understand that computers are the object of passion in their creators in much the way that sportscars are in theirs.

Pulleyblank recounted how Kasparov beat Deep Blue in their first match. The computers' designers took the lessons of the defeat back to their workshop and made some crucial tweaks."

BRAIDEN - Journey Home

As well as close Night Slugs fam, Braiden is also one of our favourite London DJs.
For his contribution to our podcast series, Braiden has put together a specially themed mix that showcases some of his key influences - synth-heavy old-skool electro, boogie-funk and technicolor-saturated techno.
For many of the current crop of UK producers and DJs, Drexciya has been just as important as Tuff Jam, So Solid or DMZ - their music resonates with the vibes of Detroit as much as those of London. Braiden's mixtape is peppered with a few modern-day synth-n-bass bangers too, neatly setting up a nuum-friendly context for some of the older styles to be revisited.

A few words from the man himself:
"My approach to the mix was to put together a mixture of electro tracks, both old and more recent, along with some other favourite tracks which fit into this aesthetic.

I entitled it "journey home" based on the Drexciya track of the same name, but also because I have sentimental feelings towards this kind of synth-based electro as it was the first kind of dance music i got into when I was about 16. I have always found something very emotive in analog synth lines - maybe it was all the Commodore 64 games I played as a kid."

London Orient: Kode9 Sinogrime

Sinogrime is a sub-genre that barely ever existed, a momentary glitch in the supposedly predictable sonic geography of London dance music. Around 2002-3, with garage crumbling and the cement still drying on grime as a genre, a few producers in E3 suddenly lurched further east than they ever had before.

This is the sound of Shanghai towerblocks and the millennial promise of a new superpower, refracted through the scuffed windows of Crossways Estate in Bow. From the outset grime's sonic palette defined it as the most futurist of genres - a steel sword cutting cleanly through UK hip-hop's wooden edifice - but it rarely sounded as futurist as this.

I went to interview Kode9 for The Guardian recently (link here), and among other things we got talking about sinogrime… Here's what he said:

I've always been fascinated by these little squiggly synths, whether it's been in jazz funk, or gangsta rap, or 80s synth pop… and also grime. That's what I love most about grime actually, that kind of hyper-coloured sound. I was never so into the aggression of grime – I liked it in the MCs and the music, but it was actually how fucking beautiful melodically Target, Wiley, Terror Danjah, Ruff Sqwad and Jammer were – the Chinese style instrumentals.

I did this mix a few years ago that was just Jammer and Wiley and Target - of just half an hour of these Chinese-style plinky-plonk sounds… it was a bit sloppy, but it is fucking amazing music. Those guys were just on taking an aspect of hip-hop and blending it with really quite jarring, brash melodies.

No tracklist I'm afraid – "all the tracks are Jammer/Wiley/Wookie/Wonder/Geeneus, but there were no track names on the Jammer whites". We'll stick it on the Lower End Spasm podcast too when Bok Bok gets back from the Night Slugs tour of last century's superpower.

My favourite sinogrime track ever: a superb beat by Jammer, with the riff nicked from an obscure old-school Jet Li film - I know this from watching (whatever it was called) at 3am once.. I pretty much leapt out my chair when the credits rolled and this oh-so-familiar melody started playing. Sharky Major's crushingly poignant - and ironic - lyric, reflecting on the tension between headstrong ambition and harsh reality in the wild east, is one of the most memorable in grime:

Gee and Wizzbit are the same person of course - I never was clear what the pseudonym was about, since the sound is interchangable. The tracks are:

It's exactly the unimpeachable DJ-led rollage we brought you in Alex's brilliant '69 Allstars' mix-slash-history lesson a couple of years ago. Midnite Remix in particular is devastating - rarely has a grime producer been able to make a synth STAB so aggressively, while still having the drums push you to move so hard at the same time. It helps, of course, that we're getting these tunes in high quality for the first time.

On this subject, beyond Grimetapes I feel there's a fairly urgent need for a salvage operation to rescue, archive and release more of these 2002/3 instrumentals. I've heard some terrible, heartbreaking things recently about crashed hard-drives belonging to Ruff Sqwad producers – if some of these unreleased classics really are lost to the ages, it would represent grime's elemental transience being brought to its natural conclusion… some of those dubs might NEVER see the light of day.

RIP Dress 2 Sweat / Numbers power moves

OK I admit I'm biased. But ever since their first release of booty, bmore and club bass edits, Dress 2 Sweat has been one of my favourite labels. Earlier this month myself and L-Vis had the pleasure of dropping the final ever Dress 2 Sweat release in the form of the Night Slugs EP.
D2S isn't over however - it's across-the-board party aesthetic will last on as they amalgamate with sister labels Stuff Records and Wireblock to form Numbers Records, a move that will see them basically taking over Glasgow/ the world. All is explained at www.nmbrs.net

Slackk - Eski House Mix

When house started building a home in the UK underground around 2007, there was a lot of excitement about the new lease of life it might bring to grime production, which had become rhythmically weary, reduced to a less expressive, less experimental formula by its own failure to hold sway on London dancefloors. No grime raves meant no reason to make dancefloor-shocks; producers either gave up altogether or resorted to unimaginative retreads and 'bait hip-hop' (those words were inseparable on RWD/Grimeforum for about two years). 2007/8 presented great opportunities for grime's first generation to bring their avant-garde motifs and dynamism to house and funky - and back to the clubs ('building a funky igloo at FWD' in 2009). But the UK funky scene - Marcus Nasty in particular - have been vehement that they don't want grime kids scuffing their shiny shoes, pulling a hood down over its clean new haircut. They've won, sadly. Grimey house production and MCs jumping on funky riddims has been a glaring, unfulfilled promise of the last few years.

From the 2002/3 era Geeneus stands alone in having taken the simple, all-powerful synth stabs of early grime and moved them into a house template. At least one of Oddz or Eastwood (featured on the mix below) is now a devout Muslim with no interest in music; I forget which one. The Eski Kid himself is still groping for that number 1 slot any way he can - and the greatly-anticipated Wiley Eskimo Instrumentals CD was deleted before it was even released.

But there are newer names fusing the two styles. Grievous Angel has moved in this area with his fantastic 'Ice Rink' funky refix, Spooky continues to mix up grime and funky to great effect, and of course our Bok Bok and Jam City wear their grime influences high up their sleeves. Tommo's shows on Live FM are well worth listening to: check this fairground madness - a tune of Tommo's own called 'Gutter Walk' apparently (warning: may contain traces of Discarda).

All this is a long-winded way of saying that the man you want on this is Slackk: semi-professional scouser, www.grimetapes.com supremo, south-east London's biggest Mr Wong fan, Junior Spesh blogger and increasingly hyped producer (watch out for the brilliant 'Fire Flies' getting a release soon). The rhythms are loose and compulsively danceable, and the sound palette is grimey enough to demand a revival of the shower face. Whatever happened to the shower face? It's about fucking time it came back, anyway.

GIRL UNIT MIX 2010

GIRL UNIT's already anthemic track "I R L" will be dropping on Night Slugs at the end of April.

His new promo mix is as epic in scope as his influences, and pretty much presents in an hour everything that makes Night Slugs tick: vibes from London via Chicago, Detroit, The Hague, Soweto, into outer space.

The juke segment at the end of the mix is particularly on point - There's been a wave of interest in the Chicago ghetto style out here recently, much of it fuelled by Addison Groove's incredible track "Footcrab". Where AG perfectly captures the half-time(implied)double-time vibe of 160bmp juke at a London-friendly tempo, Girl Unit's "IRL" draws inspiration from the downright unstable-sounding Footwork subgenre, with pitched 808 toms, tumbling triplets and percussive irregularities. ]
However as much as the juke influence is key to the track, IRL's signature neon beams of sawtooth FM synth along with its gaseous atmospherics position it in an entirely new place outside of the sonic geographics of both London and Chicago.

Bigup Outhere Records for putting out a release of truly massive African house bangers. I've been looking for a good copy of Mujava's "Mugwanti / Sgwejegweje", otherwise known as Please Mugwanti, for what feels like years now! It's shocking to see how little of this stuff gets a proper release, so for that reason this one is even more welcome.

I first heard Kode9 play this and thought it was a Lil Silva refix of Masters At Work, because the drums are so hard and stripped down and the vocal is riffing on the theme of MAW's "Brazilian Beat":

I was wrong of course, but my assumtion says a lot about just how good and relevant this track sounds in Plastic People.

MEXICAN POLICE TO PATROL NY ?

NEW YORK, New York- In a series of events which has caused wide notice and a storm of protests, the government of Mexico, through its consulate in New York in the United Nations, has announced it will begin patrolling the New York City borough of Staten Island to "safeguard" its nationals there.

The actions of Mexico come after a series of incidents the Mexican government terms "bias attacks."

Ironically, these so-called "hate crimes" have been perpetrated by blacks and Asians, indicative of rising tensions between various ethnic groups in the U.S. The Catholic Examiner and NBC New York both reported the Mexican government's intention to mount surveillance, patrol and police in and around the Staten Island community of Port Richmond, which in recent years has seen a large influx of Mexican illegal immigrants.

Since the Examiner's coverage, however, councilor officials, city hall and the local press have begun to carefully de-emphasize any possible role of Mexican law enforcement or military in efforts to secure the neighborhood.

Mexican officials have set up a neighborhood office and a local phone hot line for their nationals to report "bias incidents"—regardless as to whether they are in the United States legally.

New York City police had been monitoring the situation and investigating the reported assaults as local crimes. The actions of the Mexican government have caused Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly to order what many observers say is the most concentrated police mobilization since the World Trade Center disaster.

The main street of Port Richmond was swiftly transformed into what the New York Times described as a war zone like atmosphere with over 120 newly assigned officers, high-intensity night lighting, two huge "sky tower" police observation posts, frequent helicopter overflights and 20 police cars to watch the center of the relatively small neighborhood. Several long-term residents described it as a constant hornet's nest of activity.

Both published reports and residents say that reports of fights between Mexicans and other groups began years ago, in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Many charge the present round of incidents started in 2003 with one loss of life in 2006, which might not even be connected to the present series of events.
At a major community gathering held at the historic St. Phillips Baptist Church, speakers addressed the current situation in the neighborhood and the borough, while Mexican councilor officials looked on.

But while the Richmond anti-violence organization and assorted left-leaning journalists who attended may have been expecting a mea culpa from local residents, what they got instead was a blast of community push-back. Speaker after speaker from the black community told of horrendous conditions the largely illegal immigrants had brought to their community. Speakers described the pattern in communities affected by an influx of illegals.

Community residents, many of whom are black first-time homeowners, told of constant disputes, alcohol and drug sales, late night disruptions, trespassing and public urination.

Others in the audience, who declined to testify, spoke of men wearing clothes bearing symbols of La Raza, Aztlan and other militant pro-Mexican groups.

They also spoke of repeated attempts to summon the state liquor authority's enforcement agency to deal with the surging illegal liquor sales in the area, with little in the way of a response .

I admire Robert Reich, because he has a social conscience. However, if I were writing about the current Republican/Obama tax cut, I would not help the Republicans put Ronald Reagan's name on it. Outside of progressive circles, which reflexively blame Reagan, the 40th president is still popular, because the 1980s were the last of the good times. Who prefers 21st century America to the Reagan 1980s?
In his recent article "Reaganomics Redux" in Reader Supported News (17 December), Reich writes that "Ronald Reagan came to Washington intent on reducing taxes on the wealthy and shrinking every aspect of government except defense." As Reagan's first Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy, often labeled both in praise and derision "the father of Reaganomics," I would like to offer a different perspective.
Reagan came to Washington to put an end to stagflation and the cold war. Keynesian demand management had the wrong policy mix. Easy money pumped up aggregate demand, but high tax rates reduced the response of supply to demand. Consequently, prices rose. The problem was reflected in worsening "Phillips curve" tradeoffs between inflation and employment. As time passed, higher rates of unemployment were required to bring down inflation, and higher rates of inflation were required to boost employment.

BRAIDEN - Journey Home

As well as close Night Slugs fam, Braiden is also one of our favourite London DJs.
For his contribution to our podcast series, Braiden has put together a specially themed mix that showcases some of his key influences - synth-heavy old-skool electro, boogie-funk and technicolor-saturated techno.
For many of the current crop of UK producers and DJs, Drexciya has been just as important as Tuff Jam, So Solid or DMZ - their music resonates with the vibes of Detroit as much as those of London. Braiden's mixtape is peppered with a few modern-day synth-n-bass bangers too, neatly setting up a nuum-friendly context for some of the older styles to be revisited.

A few words from the man himself:
"My approach to the mix was to put together a mixture of electro tracks, both old and more recent, along with some other favourite tracks which fit into this aesthetic.

I entitled it "journey home" based on the Drexciya track of the same name, but also because I have sentimental feelings towards this kind of synth-based electro as it was the first kind of dance music i got into when I was about 16. I have always found something very emotive in analog synth lines - maybe it was all the Commodore 64 games I played as a kid."

Idag har Svenska Dagbladet en mycket intressant artikel om Arenadr?mmar. Sj?lv ?r jag otroligt positiv till den satsning som genomf?rs i Solna p? en Nationalarena, men lika glad som jag ?r till satsningen, lika skeptisk ?r jag till kommunens engagemang i arenabolaget. Men nu ?r staden med och fokus f?r mig och Centerpartiet kommer att vara tre.

1. Att g?ra Arenan och Solna s? attraktivt att man lockar tillr?ckligt med stora arrangemang och tillr?ckligt m?nga ?sk?dare.

2. Se till att service, infrastruktur och kollektivtrafik, blir s? bra att den ?kade m?ngden bes?kare till Arenan och Solna ocks? skapar m?jlighet f?r Solnaborna att f? mycket b?ttre kollektivtrafik. En f?rsta etapp i detta ?r ny uppg?ng i norra delen av Solna station och tv?rbana som om n?got ?r kommer att kraftigt f?rb?ttra Solnas f?rbindelser.

3. Se till att inga av skattebetalarnas pengar ska g? till Arenan ut?ver det engagemang staden har och den mark som staden sk?nkt till Arenan.

Varf?r ?r jag d? kritisk till stadens engagemang? Av det enkla sk?let att Solna har m?nga utmaningar, f?rskolor, f?rb?ttrat f?retagsklimat, parker och gr?nomr?den, infrastruktur och b?ttre trafiksituation. D?r beh?vs s?v?l de pengar man kan f? l?s som det engagemang vi politiker har.

Dessutom ?r det helt uppenbart att Arenabygget f?r elitlag och landslag inte ?r en kommunal k?rnverksamhet, om n?got s? ?r det barn- och ungdomsidrotten som ska ha st?d av kommunen. Om det finns underlag f?r en Arena och publiken str?mmar dit s? beh?vs inget kommunalt engagemang, och om publikunderlaget inte finns s? f?rtj?nar man inte skattepengar.

Nu var dock inte Centerpartiet med i stadens ledning n?r besluten fattades och jag t?nker inte tjura, nu g?r vi ist?llet det b?sta m?jliga. Och det ?r ju att samlas f?r att Arenan ska bli s? bra och v?lbes?kt som m?jligt.

Vad kommer efter Mubarak

Jag har dragit mig fr?n att skriva om h?ndelserna i Egypten. Det k?nns sv?rt att kommentera h?ndelserna politiskt, utan att f?r den skull skriva n?got om de mer personliga delarna. Jag ?r orolig ska tillst?s, har ?nnu inte f?tt kontakt med min pappa med familj sen internet och mobiln?tet sl?cktes. D?remot h?rdes vi precis innan och jag k?nner mig trots allt ganska lugn.

Idag ?r det tv? miljoner m?nniskor p? Kairos gator och Mubarak uppges vara p? v?g att avg?. Det ?r en speciell situation. Det verkar som om de folkliga protesterna faktiskt kommer att f? effekt. Inget ?r mer n?dv?ndigt. F?r hela arabv?rlden och Afrika ?r Egypten en signalland. Med ett ?ppet, demokratiskt val i Egypten skulle tryck s?ttas p? andra l?nder, b?de fr?n omv?rlden och ocks? fr?n medborgarna.

Fr?gan ?r dock vilka som vinner ett ?ppet val i Egypten. ?ven om jag ?r ?vertygad om att det Muslimska br?draskapet inte samlar mer ?n 15- 35 procent av sympatierna om jag skulle gissa, s? ?r det trots allt bara Mubaraks parti och det muslimska br?draskapet som har en fungerande partistruktur och risken ?r uppenbar att det nu ?r det Muslimska br?draskapet som vinner ett val.

Den demokratiska processen ska dock inte underskattas, f?r om det Egyptiska folket skulle f? n?got ?r p? sig ?r jag ?vertygad om att sekul?ra, demokratiska krafter kan v?xa fram. D?rf?r ?r det bara att h?lla tummarna f?r att Mubarak i sitt tal till folket strax tillk?nnager sin avg?ng och att en samlingsregering bildas.

El Barbai verkar vara den kompromisskandidat som skulle kunna vinna ett val med hj?lp av det Muslimska br?draskapet och f?rhoppningsvis beh?lla Egypten som demokrati medan fler partier kan v?xa fram.

L?t oss h?lla tummarna f?r det och att mina halvsyskon kan f? v?xa upp i ett ?ppet, fritt land med demokratiska val och yttrandefrihet.

Idag demonstrerar pappa mot Mubarak

Idag g?r min pappa i demonstrationerna mot Mubarak. Jag ?r b?de stolt och orolig, v?ldigt orolig. Efter en vecka fick jag ta p? honom sent ig?r kv?ll. P? grund av de f?rsta utbrotten av demonstrationerna i Kairo hann inte hans grupp av studenter fr?n Norge med planet utan blev strandade. Men efter en vecka kunde de ta sig hem och min pappa kunde till slut leta sig hem.

Men det h?r ?r ingen bloggpost om min far. Jag ?r naturligtvis enormt stolt ?ver att han imorgon demonstrerar. Men jag ?r ocks? imponerad ?ver hur flera miljoner m?nniskor i Egypten g?r man ur huse f?r att visa att de inte accepterar diktatorer och f?rtryck. Nu ?r inte l?ngre fr?gan om Mubarak faller, utan n?r. Vi s?tter stort hopp till dagens nya besked.

Ett uppenbart problem om vi inte f?r till en ?verg?ngsregering f?r att leda landet fram till ett nyval ?r att man inte f?r friheten att bygga upp partistrukturer, opinionsbilda och tala fritt. Annars kommer det muslimska br?draskapet som har en f?rdig struktur ha stor chans att vinna, och det ?r inte b?ttre. Dessutom kan vi inte lita p? att han faktiskt avg?r n?r allt l?gger sig.

Mubarak m?ste avg? nu. Och sen m?ste Elbarbai f? chansen att leda en samlingsregering fram till ett riktigt, ?ppet och fritt val i September.

Nu h?ller jag stolt tummarna f?r alla m?nniskor i Egypten.

Nej till prisreglering av el

Idag samlas Centerpartiet till kommundagar och ?n s? l?nge ?r det mest Mauds v?nsterinspirerade f?rslag om att reglera priserna p? elen som diskuteras. Ni som l?st Aftonbladet idag har sett att jag kritiserat f?rslaget med kraft.

Jag blir ledsen n?r v?r partiordf?rande som ska f?rverkliga eftervalsanalysen, staka ut en riktning med en id�, sakfr?gor och sp?nnande f?rslag. Det ?r knappast vare sig sp?nnande, ideologiskt eller moraliskt f?rsvarbart att reglera en marknad som ?r fri, och framf?r allt att g?ra det f?r dem som inte ens engagerar sig i att f?r?ndra sitt elhandelsavtal.

Vill man ta tag i problemet med priserna p? elmarknaden s? vore det nog b?ttre att titta p? n?tavgifterna och monopolsituationen som r?der d?r.

Centerpartiet har en del att g?ra nu

Maud vill inte tillst? att det ?r en kris f?r Centerpartiet. Jag skulle vilja s?ga att det ?r delvis fel, r?tt mycket fel. Det ?r en uppenbar kris f?r Centerpartiet n?r det g?ller v?ljarnas f?rtroende, p? inget annat s?tt kan man kommentera 4,0 procent i dagens demoskop. Men det ?r ocks? kris f?r partiets f?rm?ga att prata med v?ljarna, skapa f?rtroende och inte minst - ber?tta om vad vi vill ?stadkomma med Sverige.

Jag har sagt det alltf?r m?nga g?nger nu (senast i TV4 Nyheterna i f?rrg?r). Man vinner inte val p? vad man gjort och ett halvbra CV fr?n d?tiden, utan p? sp?nnande id�er som h?nger ihop med sakfr?gorna man driver f?r framtiden.
